Kamal Haasan is one of the greatest figures in Indian cinema. Born on November 7, 1954, in Paramakudi, in the state of Tamil Nadu, he is an actor, director, screenwriter, and producer. Considered a legend of Tamil and Hindi cinema, he has left a mark on several generations of viewers through the depth of his acting and the diversity of his roles.

Outside cinema, Kamal Haasan is also known for his public positions on society and religion. These stand in clear contrast to his original family background. Born into a traditional Brahmin Hindu context, the actor now clearly identifies as an atheist and rationalist.

Family roots deeply anchored in Hindu Brahminism

Kamal Haasan comes from a Tamil Brahmin family belonging to the Thengalai Iyengar community, a subdivision of the Vaishnavite tradition within Hinduism. His father, D. Srinivasan Iyengar, was a lawyer and freedom fighter; his mother, Rajalakshmi, was a homemaker. He therefore grew up in a traditional Brahmin family environment, with the religious practices and references associated with that setting.

One symbolic detail recalls this background at birth: the actor was initially given the first name Parthasarathy, in reference to the presiding deity of the Parthasarathy temple, a name of clearly Hindu origin. Later, he adopted the name Kamal Haasan, whose etymology he himself explained: Kamal means “lotus” in Sanskrit, while Haasan derives from hasya, the Sanskrit word for laughter. These two elements, his initial religiously connoted first name and the Sanskrit etymology of his stage name, unambiguously confirm his roots in a Hindu cultural tradition at birth.

A professed atheism, consistent and expressed throughout his career

Despite his Brahmin origins, Kamal Haasan has distanced himself from all religious belief and publicly defines himself as an atheist and rationalist. This is not an isolated or recent position: he has reaffirmed it many times, both in writing and on television. In a statement reported by the media, he notably said:

“I am not revealing a secret, I am saying something I have said many times, in writing or on television, in public. I am an atheist, I have no religious belief.”

His atheism is not limited to his public statements. It also appears in his cinematic work. Films such as Anbe Sivam and Dasavathaaram directly address themes of rationalism and question the place of religion in society. In Kamal Haasan’s case, personal convictions thus seem to form part of a broader artistic approach, giving a certain coherence to his public and creative journey.
